‘Berta Boys ~ Dir. Kyle Terrence ~ Alberta, Canada ~ 2019 ~ 20:00
‘Berta Boys is a short film that contemplates the instability of Alberta's (Canada) hyper masculine identity. In a region whose history and economy is rooted in colonialism, the cowboy mythos, and resource extraction, the landscape itself is not simply a background for events to unfurl. It is instead a primary character in the narrative of identity, an entity cyclically exploited by the desires of men. The landscape has been personified in the film as a sentient truck: a powerful organism fleeing from constant pursuit within the invisible borders of the hunting grounds. |
Chic and Chambray ~ Dir. Marco Palou ~ Brooklyn, USA ~ 2019 ~ 12:54
If one thing could change your life, would you go to any length to get it? For Carlota, that one thing is human hair, and the length is 13 inches—from 13 women. It's the price she must pay for the same blue wig as Furla, her rival and idol, and it sparks a wild road trip that'll change her forever. |
Rollerbabies (of Paradise) ~ Dirs. David Bergeron & Julie Sando ~ Windsor, Canada ~ 2018 ~ 2:55
The world wide web is a powerful leveller: content that was once produced and controlled by publishers, industries and institutions is often freely available to be conjured, shared, and re-shared in a variety of non-hierarchal ways. This is perhaps especially true of pornography, long known to be one of the central drivers of web-based technological change and commerce. Rollerbabies (of Paradise) is a montage that exhausts all promises of the exotic and the erotic found in the original films: Bird of Paradise (1932), Rollerball (1975) and Rollerbabies (1976). As a work of satire, this piece embodies its suspicions and questions many of the voyeuristic gazes found in these earlier sources. Designed as an anti-spectacle, the visuals emphasize the juxtapositions of roughly cut transitions upon the repeated movements of the bored skaters. With its sugary violins, the soundtrack is reminiscent of the kind of sentimental music used in iconic love stories. It offers a counter-narrative of a dreamy yet saccharine world. |
Venus Rising ~ Dir. Alexandra Noble ~ Ottawa, Canada ~ 2019 ~ 4:28
The film depicts the different poses of Aphrodite, shown through the movements of Burlesque dance, interspersed with those of a woman grieving in a hospital. The juxtaposition of these disparate images illustrate the contrasts and connections between these two themes. |
Exhibition to the Planet Chad ~ Dir. Andrii Andreiev ~ Ukraine ~ 2019 ~ 4:44
Expedition to the Planet Chad – that’s the title that reflects our feelings during the travel right in the heart of Africa, in Chad. Sometimes the mind was blowing away imagining that we were on the another planet, often we were comparing it to Mars. Red bizarre rocks, giant arches, plateaus, dunes… Or even to more remote planet, in the another galaxy with authentic peculiar tribes and their customs. Enchanting beauty of their faces, their style, magic and energy of their night songs. We were realizing how happy we were taking the chance to get in touch with them, still having the possibility to listen to their songs that serve not just for the entertainment, but are the part of the important rituals. Time changes everything. |
